The Midset List

The Mind Set List is a list provided to teachers by Beloit College for the Class of 2014. Thought I would share some of the interesting items on the list. Most of the freshman class were born in 1992. This is important when developing younger characters in a story. Some reader would be sure to write a letter if I wrote a scene depicting a character in that age group watching Bert Parks MCing the Miss America Contest.

For these students, Benny Hill, Sam Kinison, Sam Walton, Bert Parks and Tony Perkins have always been dead. If you are not familiar with the names, Google is a beautiful thing.

Few in the class of 2014 know how to write in cursive. Never use snail mail and email is too slow. Computers have never lacked a CD-ROM disk drive. Let's not even mention reading an actual book rather than an ebook.

Buffy has always been meeting her obligations to hunt down Lothos and other blood-suckers at Hemery High.

The world has always been trying harder to accommodate people with disabilities via ramps, Braille signs, special stalls in public bathrooms and handicapped parking spaces.

John McEnroe has never played tennis. Clint Eastwood is better know as an aged movie director than as Dirty Harry or Rowdy in Rawhide. Fergie is a pop singer, not a princess married to Andrew...and now no longer married to Andrew and the Queen is happier about that I assume.

DNA, fingerprinting and maps of the human genome have always existed. Makes you wonder how police departments of old ever solved a crime.

Unless a family member is a hoarder or into antiques they have never seen a carousel of Kodachrome slides. Of course they have a phone full of selfies.

Once getting through security, going to the airport has always resembled going to the mall.

The dominance of television news by the three networks passed while they were still in their cribs. Having hundred of cable TV channels but nothing to watch has always been routine.

Toothpaste tubes have always stood on their caps.

Food has always been irradiated.

Next time I'll share the 2015 list.
