What is a typical day in the life of a writer? Better yet what is typical. I have heard/read how some writers treat their craft as a job with regular hours. Some do an early morning break for lunch and then work until supper. My friend used to start around 9 PM and work until 2 AM. That way she wouldn't be bothered by friends dropping by or phone calls.
Personally, I am all over the place. My daily target is 500 words per day (anything over that is a gift) but the time is up for grabs. I usually shoot for after lunch and work until 3:30 PM. Believe it or not in that short time I manage to write quite a lot. After dinner I work on edits of an existing piece.
Since His Lordship is out of town this week my schedule is skewed. Yesterday, due to an early morning storm at 3:30 AM, I got an early start. One of my dogs hates storms. Unfortunately she thinks I can control them even though I have assured her I can't. A pat on the head usually suffices to assure her she will be okay. She would prefer to sit in my lap but there is no room there for a golden retriever.
As the day progressed I was thankful that I took advantage of that early morning time. Although retired I do work part-time a couple of days a week. Wouldn't you know yesterday was a challenge. You know the kind...if anything can go wrong it will. By the time I got home I was dealing with frustration and exhaustion but...yes, the dogs were waiting.
His Lordship can walk both of them together. I can't. It would almost be like being drawn and quartered. So I have to get crafty and lure one outside and quickly shut the other one in the house. That is so much like work. Even though the sky hung heavy with rain clouds I took a chance. Glad I did. Talk about timing, the rain started as I reached the driveway.
What did I do the rest of the afternoon. NOTHING.
Hope your day went smoother.
