Yesterday my friend, Gwyn, and I went back to high school. However, this time we were on the other side of the desk. We were invited to speak to creative writing classes about the road to being published. It was an eye opener as it has been, um, several years since I've been in high school.
My high school was much different as I attended an all girls Catholic high school. The laid back attitude of the students never would have flown in my day. Neither would the dress code. Of course we wore uniforms. Also, we did not change classes, the teachers did. Well that is enough said about my high school experience.
Now to the students. Not all were interested in what Gwyn and I had to say. That is not a judgment on our part, we had been forewarned by the teacher. Those particular students aside (some actually put their head on the desk and went to sleep) we had the opportunity to meet some very bright and interesting students. They listened politely, asked questions, shared what they like to write. It was a really neat exchange. Several of the students were poets. One has been published in an anthology. We must have had something interesting to say for one of the students because she came back twice.
Even though it was much different from my days in school it was really terrific to share time with them. I think we have a pretty cool generation coming behinds us.
