Research--Who Knew

I used to rag on my late friend, Gwyn Ramsey about her in depth research for her historical novels. Used to tell I wrote contemporary stories so I didn't have to do research. She disagreed with me and she was right.

In my naivete I did not count asking questions as research. Thought of it more as an interview until I started my latest WIP (work in progress). My hero is a contractor and my heroine is a real estate agent. Simple? No way. As I started to develop his character I realized I had to know a lot more about construction than I realized in order to make the story ring true, as well as create a connection between them so I don't come across as a how-to book on building a house while still connecting them as a couple with a happy ending.

So today I will be visiting a contractor's association. Have already been to the building department. Next on my list is to interview a real estate agent.

Will watching chick flicks be next on my to-do list? If so I won't be wasting writing time, I'll be studying and researching.

Ain't life grand!
