There are times when life gets in the way of writing a blog.
Wanted to share with my readers that I FINALLY finished reading the Journals of Lewis and Clark. It took me 15 months but it was worth it. I have to admit it was not a book you pick up to read on a rainy afternoon while sipping a cup of tea. On the other hand it is well worth the read.
Too often we forget where we came from and the brave men and women who helped along the way. The way history is taught is so far of the mark for learning. It is not memorizing dates and battles, i.e. they left in 1804 and returned in 1806. At least not to me. I want to learn about the people and what inspired them and what they learned in those two years..
Prior to the trek across the continent William Clark had been Meriwether Lewis' superior officer but Congress would not pay for two Captains so Clark was paid as a second lieutenant. However, Lewis always referred to Clark as "Captain C". they were officially known as the Corps of Discovery and were under the auspices of the War Department.
Team work is noted as one of the reasons for expedition's success. Discipline was strict. It had to be or they would not have survived. Indeed when they were on their way back to St. Louis people they met were surprised to see them. Most people thought they had died.
Now I am reading a work on the Civil War. I'm learning as I read it that when it comes to government, the more things change the more things stay the same.
