Days of the week

Last week I wrote about the origin of the months of the year. Now, how about the days of the week.

The days of the week come from the Anglo-Saxons, who along with their invasion brought their pagan gods with them. The days of the week are their legacy.

Sunday was originally called Sunnan Daeg, which, just like today meant "sun day".

Monday was Monan daeg, "moon day".

Tuesday was named in honor of Tiw, the Anglo-Saxon and Norse god of war.

Wednesday--Wodnes daeg was dedicated to Woden, the king of the gods in Valhalla.

Thursday--Thu(n)res daeg is a no brainer. It commemorated Thor the well-know god of thunder and the strongest and braves god of them all.

Friday was originally named Frige daeg after Thor's mother, Frigga, the most important goddess in Valhalla. There is another school thought that feels it may also be named after Freyja the Norse goddess of love. And we do love Fridays and at the end of each work week we use the acronym TGIF. Right?

Saturday--Saeter daeg is in honor of Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture and is the one day of the week that was not derived from Anglo-Saxon/Norse myth.

See the information that can be learned from Uncle John's Legendary Lost Bathroom Reader. Don't know what I would do without it. I use it regularly to fill that trivia cavity located in a hidden part of my brain.
