Lewis & Clark
I have been fascinated by the Journey of Lewis and Clark ever since I spent time at the museum 'under the arch' in St. Louis. I have read Steven Ambrose's book about their trek and right now I am reading The Journals of Lewis and Clark by Anthony Brandt.
When you take into account our dependence on technology today you have to hold this expedition in awe. These men were on their own. In point of fact, most people with the possible exception of Thomas Jefferson thought they died. There was no telecommunication if they got into trouble. They could not facebook, instant message, text, twitter or tweet where they were or what they were doing.
The preparation was mind blowing when you consider what they had to learn. For example Meriwether Lewis had to study medicine for a time in Philadelphia. As for William Clark, although Meriwether Lewis always referred to him as Capt. Clark, Clark was never commissioned by the government. They had to keep duplicate diaries in case one man died.
More information to follow.
Oh, by the way, it is said that William Clark was a very bad speller.
